SLOW WEEKENDS

An outdoor bath, and the art of doing a little less.

How to make room for slow moments at Seren or Juniper, from a countryside soak to an easy supper and an evening without a packed itinerary.

A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
  • Let the weather decide when to use the outdoor bath.
  • Keep warm layers and your return indoors easy.
  • Plan a comfortable indoor alternative for colder evenings.

The same countryside, a different point of view.

Some of the best holiday moments are small enough to miss if the plan is too busy. A second cup of tea. The light changing on a field. A few pages read without an interruption. At Mid Wales Shepherds Huts, the outdoor bath belongs to that family of pleasures. It gives you a reason to stay in one place for a while and pay attention to the setting around your wagon.

Both Seren and Juniper have their own freestanding outdoor bath. The actual photographs show the characterful tubs, taps, caddies and planting around them. This is outdoor bathing in a farm landscape, with flowers and an open view. Browse the gallery of the wagon you are considering, and ask Natalia about anything that matters to your comfort before making your booking request.

Choose a moment, not a timetable.

You do not need to save every special moment for the evening. A bath after a walk or during a quiet afternoon may suit you better than one planned for the end of a long day. Consider the conditions when you arrive and take the host’s guidance on how to use the facilities. In freezing weather the outdoor bath is unavailable, so it helps to see it as part of a stay rather than the sole reason for travelling.

A little preparation makes the experience more relaxed. Keep what you need within easy reach, including a warm layer for afterwards, and think about the short journey back inside. Choose items that are comfortable to use around water. Leave electronic equipment somewhere dry. The aim is to reduce the number of things asking for your attention, including the urge to photograph every moment.

Make space on both sides of the soak.

If your afternoon is scheduled to the minute, an outdoor bath can become another appointment. Give it some room instead. Prepare a simple meal beforehand, decide whether you actually want to go out later, and leave enough time to get warm and comfortable indoors. A slower evening starts with fewer decisions rather than a longer list of things to achieve.

The wagons’ compact kitchenettes make simple food a sensible companion to a quiet stay. Bring the ingredients for a familiar recipe and check equipment with Natalia if it will affect your plans. You might eat first, then take time outside, or return to a supper that is easy to assemble. There is no set ritual you need to follow. Choose the version that feels pleasant to you.

Let an indoor evening have its own appeal.

Wet, windy or cold conditions can change what feels comfortable outdoors. Each wagon also has an indoor shower room, so the practical side of your stay does not depend on using the outdoor bath. A warm shower, clean clothes and a comfortable seat can be a welcome change after a day exploring. Bring a book or something you enjoy doing without a large amount of equipment.

It helps to give the indoor option equal status in your plans. If you come away for a slower pace, a rainy evening is still time away from the ordinary routine. You can cook, talk, read or simply listen to the weather. No particular mood or wellness result is promised; the useful thing is that you have a space in which to decide what kind of evening you need.

A stay built around simple pleasures.

Outside the bath, the firepit and outdoor chairs offer another place to pause when the conditions and host instructions permit. You might spend one evening outside and another indoors. A short farm walk or a single excursion to the Elan Valley can give the day a little shape without using up every hour. The activities planner can suggest options, but it is equally reasonable to leave a morning undecided.

Seren and Juniper each sleep two, and direct bookings begin with a request to Natalia. Choose dates to see the current quote, then include any questions about the bath, arrival or the facilities in your enquiry. Once the practical details are agreed, the pleasure is in how little else needs arranging. Pack for the weather, bring something good to read and leave a little room for the day to surprise you.
